El Palmar – Área Natural de Manejo Integrado (ANMI)
Located in the municipality of Presto in the department of Chuquisaca, the El Palmar – Área Natural de Manejo Integrado is one of the most remarkable protected ecosystems of Bolivia. Created to conserve the rare high-altitude palm forests of the region, the protected area preserves a unique ecological transition zone between Andean valleys, inter-Andean dry forests, and montane ecosystems.
The most distinctive feature of El Palmar is the forest of the endemic Parajubaea torallyi, locally known as Janchicoco. These majestic palms grow naturally only in a few valleys of central Bolivia and form impressive palm groves between 2,400 and 3,400 meters above sea level—an exceptional phenomenon for palm species worldwide. The ancient palm forests create a spectacular landscape that attracts botanists, researchers, and nature travelers.
El Palmar also shelters a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Large mammals such as the Spectacled Bear, locally called Oso Jukumari, inhabit the remote forests of the region. Other predators include the Cougar (Puma concolor) , while rare felines such as the elusive Andean Mountain Cat (Leopardus jacobita) may inhabit the surrounding highland ecosystems. The area is also a paradise for birdwatchers thanks to species such as the Red-eared Parrot, locally known as Rotohraras.
Among the most impressive landscapes is the Cañón Misión, a spectacular canyon carved by seasonal rivers. Inside the canyon visitors can find natural pools of clear water surrounded by dramatic rock formations. Another iconic site is Condor Bañana, a natural viewpoint where travelers may observe the majestic Andean condor gliding above the cliffs. The wetland area of Yanacocha is another important habitat for birds and wildlife.
El Palmar offers excellent opportunities for nature-based tourism, including hiking trails through palm forests, wildlife observation, and scientific field excursions. Visitors can also explore archaeological sites such as the K’ala Rumi Petroglyphs, where ancient rock carvings reveal traces of pre-Hispanic cultures that once inhabited these valleys.
The nearby town of Presto is also historically significant. It is associated with the legendary independence heroine Juana Azurduy de Padilla, who organized resistance against Spanish colonial rule during the independence movements of the early 19th century. In Presto stands the house where she once lived and established a strategic headquarters during the revolutionary uprisings of 1809. From here she prepared resistance forces and participated in important battles such as those of Canal Pampa and Kespillajta.
With its rare palm forests, remarkable wildlife, archaeological heritage, and revolutionary history, El Palmar ANMI represents one of Bolivia’s most fascinating destinations for ecological and cultural tourism.

Church of San Lázaro – Sucre
This was the very first church that was built in Bolivia. Originally, it was a very simple, rectangular thatched building with a mud altar. The church features an elongated floor plan with attached chapels. The paintings of Christ and the Apostles are attributed to the Sevillian artist Polanco.
The Church of San Lázaro in Sucre, Bolivia, is one of the oldest and most historically significant religious buildings in the city. Built around 1544 during the Spanish colonial period, it served as one of Sucre’s earliest parish churches before the construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Located at Daniel Calvo Street, corner of Manuel Ascencio Padilla, the church is known for its simple colonial architecture and enduring stone walls that stand as a testament to the city’s early history. Inside, visitors can admire a historic altarpiece attributed to 16th-century sculptor Juan (or Andrés) Hernández, an important example of colonial religious art.
San Lázaro remains an active parish with daily Mass and traditional celebrations such as the Holy Sepulchre procession at Easter. Recent conservation efforts by the Sucre municipality have focused on restoring the main facade and roof, ensuring the preservation of this important cultural and architectural monument.

General Cemetery of Sucre
The General Cemetery of Sucre, inaugurated in 1826, is one of the most valuable heritage sites in the Bolivian city. Initially conceived as a simple graveyard, it has been transformed into a historic garden where presidents, national heroes, benefactors, intellectuals and families key to Bolivia’s political and economic life are laid to rest.
Its design is a rich combination of tree-lined streets, marble monuments, chapels and mausoleums that reflect the predominant architectural styles of the 19th and 20th centuries, from neoclassical to modernist influences.
Visiting it offers a unique opportunity to understand the social evolution of Sucre, admire funerary works of art and discover historical stories that live within its walls. It is considered an open-air museum that combines history, architecture, art and tranquillity.
Walking through its wide corridors is like walking through history: each mausoleum tells the story of an era, a lineage or an event. Among the most notable are those of the Argandoña and Pacheco families.
– The Argandoñas: Known for their role in philanthropy and economic activity during the republican period, they built an imposing mausoleum that symbolises their status and their significant contribution to the urban development of Sucre and to charitable works.
– The Pachecos: Represented by the legacy of former president Gregorio Pacheco, one of the country’s most influential mining entrepreneurs. His mausoleum recalls his fortune and his impact on national politics, as a president renowned for public works and his support for educational and health institutions.
The General Cemetery is not only important because of who rests there, but also because of its scenic beauty. Its manicured gardens, tall cypress trees, and quiet atmosphere make it an ideal place for walking and contemplation. Sculptures, stained glass windows, carved tombstones, and monumental mausoleums narrate almost two centuries of Bolivian history.

Templo de San Miguel Arcángel
Bolivia’s richest interior decoration is found in San Miguel Church
The old Jesuit church, formerly called St. James the Greater, consists of a single nave and has a Latin cross plan with a side chapel. The church has one of the country’s most beautiful Mudejar coffered ceilings, five altarpieces and a gorgeous baroque-style pulpit. The two Renaissance portals inside the church give access to the baptistery and the Chapel of Loreto.
One of the city’s tallest towers as well as the ashlar masonry portals characterize the church’s exterior. The church’s main portal was realized in the Mannerist style and the portal leading to the chapel in the Renaissance style.
Chuflay
The Chuflay is the national cocktail of Bolivia and one of the country’s most refreshing and iconic drinks. Made with Singani, fresh lime juice, and ginger ale, this light and aromatic cocktail is deeply rooted in Bolivian culture.
If you travel to Bolivia, tasting a Chuflay is a must-do experience.
“Chuflay” refers to a Bolivian drink. The name has been used ever since the day an English train driver of the Bolivia Railway Co., who used to enjoy his whisky or gin with ginger ale in the dining car, realized that his bottles had been forgotten. Concerned, the waiter offered him a “Llallagua” instead. The name of this singani-based drink with soda, ice and lemon stems from a tin mine, whereas singani is a typical Bolivian muscatel brandy. Not being familiar with this beverage, the train driver rejected it for fear of a hangover until his craving got the better of him. The next day, not having experienced any hangover symptoms, he commented “sure fly” when ordering his “Llallagua”. CHUFLAY is how the waiter, who spoke no English, ended up pronouncing it.
What is Singani?
Singani is Bolivia’s national spirit, distilled from Muscat of Alexandria grapes grown in high-altitude Andean valleys (above 1,600 meters). Known for its floral aroma and clean finish, Singani is a unique grape brandy protected by Bolivian designation of origin.
Unlike many other spirits, Singani is distilled only once, preserving its delicate and aromatic character.
Traditional Chuflay Recipe
Ingredients:
– 50 ml Singani
– 150 ml Ginger Ale (Salvietti Ginger Ale Ross!)
– Juice of ½ fresh lime
– Ice cubes
– Lime slice for garnish
Preparation:
– Fill a tall glass with ice.
– Add the Singani.
– Pour in fresh lime juice.
– Top with ginger ale.
– Stir gently and garnish with lime.
The result is a refreshing, citrusy and aromatic cocktail.
Where Can You Drink a Chuflay? You can find Chuflay in:
Bars and restaurants throughout Bolivia. Cultural festivals and celebrations. Select Latin American cocktail bars in Europe and the United States. Anywhere Singani is imported and available
Still, the most authentic Chuflay experience is in Bolivia itself — especially in historic cities like Sucre.
Templo de Santo Domingo
It is believed that the Dominican Order built Santo Domingo Church on a plot of land given away by Gonzalo Pizarro. The enlarged and remodeled church has two portals: the lesser portal in the Early Renaissance style is the older of the two, whereas the triple baroque portal with Mudejar touches forms the main entrance.
The church’s interior features several cedar carved and gilded altarpieces. Most of them are built in the baroque style, the altarpiece depicting Saint Dominic is rococo and the main altar neoclassical in style.
The superb sculpture of the Christ of the Great Power (Cristo del Gran poder) in one of the aisles continues to be venerated some fifty years after having been placed here. The legend goes that it was found in the Gran Poder House, which used to belong to the marquis of Casa Palacio and now houses the Charcas Museum.
Convento y Monasterio de Santa Clara
The monastery was founded in 1636 by its generous benefactress Doña María de Ceballos. Her heart was set on establishing Franciscan nuns dedicated to St Clair in Sucre, back then called Charcas. Independent nuns’ cells are situated on two floors around the lovely patio of what is still a running, enclosed monastery. The arches are supported by ornate sandstone columns.
In the museum’s two rooms you can discover the paintings of the renowned artist Bernardo Bitti, major sculptures, precious furniture, jewelry, gold plate, valuable liturgical objects and baroque musical instruments. Don’t miss the magnificent 18th-century organ in the single-nave church.

Mi Pueblo “Samary” evokes memories of Bolivia’s former colonial villages. Being a cultural preservation project, our hotel offers a comfortable, luxurious environment that reflects our national identity through its colonial and mestizo architecture, habits and customs. In the sunny, flowered patio you will find a traditional adobe oven. It is used to heat up bread for a typical breakfast served with api moreno (a purple sweetcorn drink) that comes in addition to buffet breakfast. While the room decoration follows essentially variations on the same theme, the artistically draped weavings from the Yampara culture are on display in each room. Museo de Arte Indígena (ASUR)
The Museum of Indigenous Art is also known as the textile museum. It is a must-do for anyone interested in the indigenous communities, especially those of the Sucre area. The museum particularly focuses on the woven Jalq’a and Tarabuco textiles and provides a real insight into these local cultures.
The museum consists of 9 exhibition rooms. You can also watch a weaver at work, giving a live demonstration of the ancient techniques used to create the elaborate designs. Unique, high-quality textiles and ceramics made by indigenous artisans are on sale in the museum’s shop.
One of the museum’s main targets is to reveal the existence of indigenous art by promoting ethnic textiles. The museum pays homage to those artists and artisans who continue to conserve and develop their own original culture, with roots lost in the depths of their pre-Columbian past. The exhibitions bring to light the complex creative thought, deeply rooted in the ethnic culture and meaningfully expressed in the weavings as well as their highly technical quality.
The museum is an integral part of the Indigenous Art Revival Program, initiated by ASUR in 1986. From its beginning, the program mainly aimed at reviving the traditional textiles and generate additional income for the indigenous communities of the Jalq’a and Tarabuco cultures. The program now numbers more than 800 associate female weavers as well as 200 male tapestry weavers and embroiderers.

Casa de la Libertad Sucre – Bolivia’s Independence Museum
The Casa de la Libertad is Bolivia’s first national historic monument and the most important museum in the country. It is here that Bolivia’s independence was forged and the Republic was born, making it one of the most symbolic and essential places to visit in Sucre.
Originally built in 1621 by the Jesuits as part of the Universidad Mayor Real y Pontificia de San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca, the building is an outstanding example of colonial architecture. The museum occupies the former cloister, surrounded by elegant single-level galleries supported by solid stone columns. Notable features include the massive cedar entrance door studded with bronze nails and the richly decorated Independence Hall, with its Hispano-indigenous carved choir stalls, gilded details, and intricate Mudéjar-style coffered ceiling.
Originally used as the university’s ceremonial hall where doctoral theses were defended, this space became the stage of history on August 6, 1825. On that day, the General Assembly of the Provinces of Upper Peru proclaimed independence and founded the Bolivian Republic. Here, the first constitution—associated with Simón Bolívar—was approved, and Antonio José de Sucre was sworn in as the first president.
Converted into a museum in the 20th century, the Casa de la Libertad now houses invaluable national treasures. In the Independence Hall, visitors can see the original Act of Independence, portraits of key figures such as Bolívar, Sucre, and José Ballivián, as well as historic swords used in decisive battles. Other rooms include the Senate Chambers, displaying portraits, decorations, and personal objects of Bolivia’s presidents, and the Marshal Sucre Room, dedicated to one of the country’s most important heroes.
Highlights also include the famous Bandera de Macha, one of the earliest patriotic symbols in the region, and the Hall of Heroes, where visitors can learn about figures such as Juana Azurduy de Padilla and Manuel Ascencio Padilla. The elegant Hall of Honor features fine 19th-century French furniture, adding another layer to the museum’s historical narrative.
The library, archive, and map collection are accessible to researchers, reinforcing the Casa de la Libertad as a living center of historical knowledge.
👉 Even if the official website is sometimes unavailable, the museum is open to visitors and offers guided tours that make Bolivia’s history accessible and engaging for all ages, including families.
👉 Visiting this landmark is not only one of the top things to do in Sucre, but also an essential experience to truly understand Bolivia’s past and identity.
