Templo de San Miguel Arcángel
Bolivia’s richest interior decoration is found in San Miguel Church
The old Jesuit church, formerly called St. James the Greater, consists of a single nave and has a Latin cross plan with a side chapel. The church has one of the country’s most beautiful Mudejar coffered ceilings, five altarpieces and a gorgeous baroque-style pulpit. The two Renaissance portals inside the church give access to the baptistery and the Chapel of Loreto.
One of the city’s tallest towers as well as the ashlar masonry portals characterize the church’s exterior. The church’s main portal was realized in the Mannerist style and the portal leading to the chapel in the Renaissance style.
Chuflay
“Chuflay” refers to a Bolivian drink. The name has been used ever since the day an English train driver of the Bolivia Railway Co., who used to enjoy his whisky or gin with ginger ale in the dining car, realized that his bottles had been forgotten. Concerned, the waiter offered him a “Llallagua” instead. The name of this singani-based drink with soda, ice and lemon stems from a tin mine, whereas singani is a typical Bolivian muscatel brandy. Not being familiar with this beverage, the train driver rejected it for fear of a hangover until his craving got the better of him. The next day, not having experienced any hangover symptoms, he commented “sure fly” when ordering his “Llallagua”. CHUFLAY is how the waiter, who spoke no English, ended up pronouncing it.
Templo de Santo Domingo
It is believed that the Dominican Order built Santo Domingo Church on a plot of land given away by Gonzalo Pizarro. The enlarged and remodeled church has two portals: the lesser portal in the Early Renaissance style is the older of the two, whereas the triple baroque portal with Mudejar touches forms the main entrance.
The church’s interior features several cedar carved and gilded altarpieces. Most of them are built in the baroque style, the altarpiece depicting Saint Dominic is rococo and the main altar neoclassical in style.
The superb sculpture of the Christ of the Great Power (Cristo del Gran poder) in one of the aisles continues to be venerated some fifty years after having been placed here. The legend goes that it was found in the Gran Poder House, which used to belong to the marquis of Casa Palacio and now houses the Charcas Museum.
Convento y Monasterio de Santa Clara
The monastery was founded in 1636 by its generous benefactress Doña María de Ceballos. Her heart was set on establishing Franciscan nuns dedicated to St Clair in Sucre, back then called Charcas. Independent nuns’ cells are situated on two floors around the lovely patio of what is still a running, enclosed monastery. The arches are supported by ornate sandstone columns.
In the museum’s two rooms you can discover the paintings of the renowned artist Bernardo Bitti, major sculptures, precious furniture, jewelry, gold plate, valuable liturgical objects and baroque musical instruments. Don’t miss the magnificent 18th-century organ in the single-nave church.

Mi pueblo Samary – Hotel Boutique
Mi Pueblo “Samary” evokes memories of Bolivia’s former colonial villages. Being a cultural preservation project, our hotel offers a comfortable, luxurious environment that reflects our national identity through its colonial and mestizo architecture, habits and customs. In the sunny, flowered patio you will find a traditional adobe oven. It is used to heat up bread for a typical breakfast served with api moreno (a purple sweetcorn drink) that comes in addition to buffet breakfast. While the room decoration follows essentially variations on the same theme, the artistically draped weavings from the Yampara culture are on display in each room. Guests won’t be able to resist the temptation of our Chichería, a bar full of old-world charm, allowing them to be transported back to the good old days of a colonial village.

Museo de Arte Indígena (ASUR)
The Museum of Indigenous Art is also known as the textile museum. It is a must-do for anyone interested in the indigenous communities, especially those of the Sucre area. The museum particularly focuses on the woven Jalq’a and Tarabuco textiles and provides a real insight into these local cultures.
The museum consists of 9 exhibition rooms. You can also watch a weaver at work, giving a live demonstration of the ancient techniques used to create the elaborate designs. Unique, high-quality textiles and ceramics made by indigenous artisans are on sale in the museum’s shop.
One of the museum’s main targets is to reveal the existence of indigenous art by promoting ethnic textiles. The museum pays homage to those artists and artisans who continue to conserve and develop their own original culture, with roots lost in the depths of their pre-Columbian past. The exhibitions bring to light the complex creative thought, deeply rooted in the ethnic culture and meaningfully expressed in the weavings as well as their highly technical quality.
The museum is an integral part of the Indigenous Art Revival Program, initiated by ASUR in 1986. From its beginning, the program mainly aimed at reviving the traditional textiles and generate additional income for the indigenous communities of the Jalq’a and Tarabuco cultures. The program now numbers more than 800 associate female weavers as well as 200 male tapestry weavers and embroiderers.
Hacienda Huata
A high level of comfort and conveniences await you at this old, colonial country house. Spread on 52 ha, the private property comprises 22 terraces extending from the edge of a ravine to the summit of a pine-covered mountain, allowing you to fully connect with nature. The thermal waters from our mythical, 400-year-old hill of volcanic origin flow into our 4 pools that are perfect for a swim. A part from the gardens full of exotic fruit trees and local plants, our piece of land boasts rocky formations and lots of trails for outdoor lovers. Given its hillside location and all the pools, the hacienda of Huata is a truly charming place that is situated only 13 km from Sucre away at an altitude of 2,500 m. Although the main house was built in 1935, its most significant parts were added in 1850 by president Manuel Isidoro Belzu.

Museos Universitarios: Museo Colonial Charcas, Galería de Arte Contemporánea, Museo Antropológico
The Gran Poder House has been owned by the Pontifical University of San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca since 1957. However, the Charcas Colonial Museum dates back to 27 May 1939, when it was founded on initiative of the Athenaeum of Chuquisaca Fine Arts. It is now one of the country’s most important museums. The building of the viceregal period was financed by the Spanish Treasury before it became the property of the first marquis of Casa Palacio. It is known as the House of Great Power due to the Sevillian sculpture of the Christ that used to be venerated by parishioners from all over the city in the family’s private chapel on Fridays.
The Charcas Colonial Museum houses an outstanding collection of viceregal art. Paintings by European Mannerist and baroque masters as well as mestizo masterpieces from the Charcas, Potosi and Cuzco schools are displayed alongside famous local masters like Melchor Pérez de Holguín and Gaspar Miguel de Berrio. The museum also features silverware, sculptures as well as 17th to 19th century furniture.
The Contemporary Art Gallery mainly focuses on promoting artwork from the Department of Chuquisaca. There is also a collection of paintings by Bolivian artists of the 20th century like Cecilio Guzmán de Rojas of the nativist movement.
Archeology, folklore and ethnography make up the three thematic exhibitions of the Archaeological and Anthropological Museum that also spotlights Chuquisaca. The museum’s 3,000 pieces include pottery, weapons, sumptuary objects and different tools from roughly 3,500 years ago until the Spanish occupation and colonization. The mummified human remains and trepanned skulls from different ancient cultures of the pre-Columbian era as well as the reproductions of six rock painting sites are especially worth seeing.

CHOCOLATES PARA TI
The “Para Ti” chocolate factory is located in Sucre, Bolivia’s constitutional and historical capital city, renowned for being “the city of chocolate” due to its chocolate-producing tradition. Going back to the 19th century, the chocolate used to be made for the miners working in the Potosi silver mines. The wild cocoa comes from the Amazon region of Bolivia. It is collected and processed by farming communities living in the rainforest. Artisans use natural materials like wicker, bamboo, wood and banana tree bark for the packaging as well as textiles that are handwoven by countrywomen. “Para Ti” products, available in over thirty flavours, can be bought in all of Bolivia’s cities. Our Sucre-based factory is open for visitors and in our three central stores you can savour hot chocolate, ice cream, cake and other delicious desserts. Committed to social responsibility, the company provides programmes that are aimed at the wellbeing of its employees. They support health and sports and are dedicated to the preservation of the city’s historical heritage as well as the environment.

Casa de la Libertad
Casa de la Libertad is considered to be Bolivia’s most important historic monument. This is the spot where the events leading to the independence of the country occurred and where the Bolivian Republic emerged. Both emblematic and symbolic, it continues to be a civic cultural space where the country’s most important ceremonial acts take place.
In 1621, the Society of Jesus started construction work on the building, which was going to be part of the Pontifical University of San Francisco Xavier. The building itself is an architectural gem of the viceregal period. The museum is located in the old single-storey cloister. It is surrounded by galleries and granite columns support its roof. Architectural highlights include the huge, native cedar door studded with bronze nails and featuring big knockers as well as the Independence Hall with its carved and gilded, Hispanic and American Native choir, the fancy seating as well as the multicoloured Mudejar coffered ceiling.
The domestic chapel of the university was the main hall where candidates used to defend their PhD thesis. The deputies of the General Assembly of the Departments of Upper Peru issued the Declaration of Independence and proclaimed the Republic of Bolívar in this very hall on 6th of August 1825. Bolivia’s first constitution, drawn up by the liberator Simon Bolívar, and the basic laws of the new state were ratified within these walls. It was also here that Field Marshal Sucre was sworn in as the Republic’s first president.
The Liberty House became a museum in the second third of the 20th century. Invaluable artefacts are on display in the Independence Hall. Among them figure the Independence Act, the portraits of the liberators Simon Bolívar, Antonio José de Sucre and José Ballivian as well as two of their swords that were victoriously used in several battles in 1824 and 1841.
Portraits, medals and personal belongings of Bolivia’s presidents are shown in the Senate Room. Field Marshal Sucre Room is dedicated to the illustrious hero. The Macha flag, also known as the Belgrano flag and regarded as the most sacred patriotic symbol by Argentinians and Bolivians alike, is housed in the chapel-shaped alcove. The Hero Room highlights the portrait and the remains of the legendary guerrilla fighter Juana Azurduy de Padilla as well as the portrait of her guerrilla husband, Manuel Ascencio Padilla. The Honour Room is decorated with 19th century French furniture.
The library, the archives, and the map collection are open to national and international researchers.
